Samara and Carrillo

Samara and Carrillo are small coastal towns, still mostly run and populated by Ticos. The atmosphere can be described as somewhat bohemian, very lade back and in a nut shell: PURA VIDA. You will find public schools (as well as a new semi-private bilingual one - Samara Pacific School), a hospital clinic, a private English speaking doctor, pharmacies, churches, 2 banks, 2 football grounds, a police station, dvd shop, postal office and a small fishing community.

There are also several internet cafes, various restaurants and bars, coffee shops, tour agencies, car rental enterprises, and two commercial centers. A gym and organic food store opened recently and they host a farmers market every Friday from 3-6

Two internationally acclaimed schools, one for learning Spanish, the other, the art of massage are also based in Samara.

Last but not least, just a 45 minute drive away is Nicoya, (a rather large city for Costa Rican standards), that has most everything you could need -including a hospital.

Samara beach is about 6 miles long and outlined with trees of all species. Many types of quaint little cottages, boutique hotels, restaurants and bars can also be found along the beachfront.  When it is low tide, the beach area becomes very large and a wonderful place to go for a jog, walk, play with young children, or kick a ball around. Samara also holds Costa Rica's prestigious 'Blue Flag' award, given only to the beaches and communities with the cleanest waters and proven environmentally sound practices.

The beach of Carrillo is quite different - despite being so close to Samara. To begin with, there are no buildings of any kind along the beachfront. In fact, it is a good idea to bring water with you should you be planning to stay for more thana couple of hours.

The beach is also lined solely with palm trees making it gorgeous and perfect for those picture postcards you want to send back to your friends and family.

This beach is slightly smaller in length but still a good hours walk to go up and back.

The international community in these two towns is quite large, however rather dispersed - so much so you still feel like you are in Costa Rica while at the same time not completelyalone. Canadians, Americans, Italians and French/Swiss make up the largest groups.
